Spotted eagle-owl family
Family life
Spotted eagle-owls are monogamous, they mate for life. The pair usually makes a nest on the ground, hidden under a bush, in the grass or among rocks.
The female lays 2 to 4 eggs. Incubation is done by the female alone, the male provides her with food in this period.
Upon hatching, the owlets are blind. After seven days they open their eyes. When they are 4 to 6 weeks old, they start to wonder around the nest and they will be able to fly at seven weeks. They remain with their parents until they are about twelve weeks old.
Nest in a tree
A pair of spotted eagle owls kept their chicks not on the ground, but in a tree near the chalets and campsites of Nossob camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park.
Exporing around the nest
A spotted eagle-owl family had their nest under a bush very close to our cabin in Kielie Krankie wilderness camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park. In the evening the chick were allowed to walk around and test their wings.
