The white throat and blue-black breast band are diagnostic. Sand and Banded Martins also have a white throat and dark breast band, but the breast bands are brown and both species have brown upperparts.
Juvenile is less glossy than adult above, and has a reddish brown forehead.
Closely associated with water.
