A larger and brighter, more colourful version of House Sparrow. Differs from House Sparrow by its larger size, bright chestnut back and sides of the head, and chestnut (not grey) rump.
Female is larger and much redder on the back and shoulders than female House Sparrow. Juvenile resembles female.
Dry thornveld; not usually associated with human habitation.
A 'cheereep, cheereeu', very similar to that of House Sparrow.
