Description
Small, brownish seed-eating passerines. They have a dull plamage for feeding on the ground. They are gregarious when not breeding and will feed and roost together, some species in special roosting nests. they do form mixed species foraging flocks. They are omnivorous, eating seed, fruit, nectar and insects.
When on the ground, they hop but may occasionally walk. Thye will take food from plants and they will forage in bushes and trees.
They are monogamous and build ball-shaped nests of grass and feathers, placed in branches, hole crevices, old swallow nests etc. They lay 3 - 5 creamy or greenish eggs with heavy blotching and spotting. Incubation and care of young is done by both sexes.
They mat be parasitised by cuckoo or honeyguide.
