The shaggy crest, yellow face speckled with red, and yellow underparts with a broad black breast band are diagnostic.
Female is usually less vividly coloured. Juvenile resembles adult.
Woodland, savanna, riverine forest and suburban gardens.
Male utters a sustained trilling 'trrrrrrrr.....'; female responds with a repeated 'puka-puka'.
