Description
Arboreal, garrulous (chattering, talkative), ridescent long-billed, mostly gregarious species. They forage by climbing tree trunks and branches. They feed on arthropods, especially insects, which they find by probing with their bills in rotten wood and in crevices in bark. They also take nectar.
They are monogamous and breed in tree-holes, laying 3 - 4 blue eggs. Wood-hoopoes breed cooperatively in groups of up to 14 birds. Scimitarbills breed in pairs. Incubation is done by the female alone, she never leaves the nest and is fed by the male or by group members. The young are fed by both adults (and wood-hoopoes also by flock members).
They are sometimes parasitised by greater and lesser honeyguides.
