The smallest kingfisher in the region. It may me differentiated from the similar malachite kingfisher by its smaller size, its broad orange superlcilium and the voilet wash around the ear coverts.
Juvenile resembles adult but has a blackish bill.
Non-aquatic; frequents woodland, savanna and coastal forest.
A high-pitched 'chip-chip' flight note.
