Snouted cobra


Appearance
A thick-set snake with a large head. Colouration is variable, but usually yellow-grey to brown or blue-black, the belly is yellow with dark blotches. It has a dark throat band which is more conspicuous in juveniles. Adults are aggressive towards one another and readlily bite. Spreads a broad hood in threat display.

Behaviour
Nocturnal. TYhe snouted cobra emerges at dusk to forage for small vertebrates. The diet is varied, often including toads and other snakes and occasionally bird's eggs. Very large adults frequently eat puff adders.

Habitat
It is often seen basking at its retreat (old termite nests, hollow logs etc.) in the morning sun.
