Lesser grey shrike
In comparison with red-backed shrike, this species is larger, has more extensive black mask that encompasses the forehead, a grey, not chestnut, back and predominantly black, not brown, wings.
Female is duller, often with less black on the forehead. Juvenile differs from juvenile and female red-backed shrike by its much larger size and buffier, less barred underparts.
Mixed, dry thornveld and semi-desert scrub.
A soft 'chuk'; a warbled song, heard before migration.
