Description
Elongate finch-like birds with fairly long slender bills and boldly marked heads. They have longer tails and shorter legs than canaries or sparrows. They can temporarily expand their range when food conditions are favourable
Their large feet are adapted for scratching for food in the soil. They look primarily for seeds, flower parts and insects on the ground.
Monogamous, forming long-ime pair bonds, they are generally not territorial. Shallow cup nest of grass and rootlets built by female, placed by rock, tuft of grass or in low shrub or tree. Clutch of 2 - 3 eggs, incubation largely or exclusively by female. Eggs either white with beautiful scrolls and spots towards blunt pole or bluish with thick and evenly spread splotching and speckling. Young are cared for by both adults. Some species are targeted by Klaas's and Diederick cuckoos.
